Desert Cross takes a special offering at each one of our regular worship services to support The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) World Hunger Appeal and ELCA Disaster Response. All the support for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal comes from specially designated offerings and gifts from ELCA members and congregations. Every dollar given to the World Hunger Appeal makes an impact in fighting chronic hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. The use of these funds breaks down as follows: *International Development & Relief 71.4% *Domestic Development & Relief 10.2% *Education (5.2%) & Advocacy (5.4%) 10.6% *Administration 7.8% ELCA World Hunger Appeal partners with Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in reaching the needy around the world. One of the programs that we support in partnership with LWR is the Stand With Africa campaign. This program supports communities and churches in Africa in overcoming HIV/AIDS, banish hunger and work for peace. We work with LWF to support families in Haiti. The Haiti Piglet Project seeks to provide food and a sustainable income for those who live in poverty. The ELCA Disaster Reponse works with its partner organizations, LWR and LWF in responding to disasters here at home and abroad. When a disaster occurs, the primary objective is to save lives, alleviate suffering and provide food, medicine, shelter and clothing as well as provide protection in war-like emergency situations. After the media is gone, the ELCA and our partner organizations continue to accompany the people to bring about recovery and healing.
