A tranquil heart is life to the body; Proverbs 14:30a
My daughter sent me this picture of a silly squirrel lounging on the curb of her bank’s drive-up window! It couldn’t look any more relaxed in this open posture if it tried. There was a scurry of squirrels frolicking in the drive and even resting on the drive-up bank tube! They were peaceful on a hot summer day just playing and resting! It was as if they embraced the wise words of Proverbs 14, A tranquil heart is life to the body.
The book of Proverbs is a collection of sayings by wise King Solomon and other wise ones to guide their loved ones. The invitation to the peace that comes from a tranquil heart can be hard to come by in our hard-driving, goal-focused world. With the summer solstice upon us bringing longer days maybe we can take that wisdom to heart.
Summertime means more occasions to relax and play. Where can you find a place to lounge? What could help you to be more open and relaxed? Where can you play? Is there a book you’ve been wanting to read? A movie you’d like to view? A concert you’d like to attend? Taking time to relax and play can lead to a tranquil heart and renewed life. So let’s make like the squirrels and follow the wisdom of Solomon this summer!
