Each week, Desert Cross takes a special offering at each worship service that we call The Hunger Jar. The collection leaves the walls of Desert Cross to support The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s World Hunger Appeal and ELCA Disaster Response. Support for ELCA World Hunger comes from specially designated offerings and gifts from ELCA members and congregations. Together with other ELCA churches, our offerings have a real impact across the world!
Every dollar given to ELCA World Hunger makes an impact in fighting chronic hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. ELCA World Hunger partners with organizations like Lutheran World Relief (LWR), Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and Church World Service (CWS) in reaching the needy around the world. From health clinics to microloans, water wells to animal husbandry, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and poverty.
ELCA Disaster Response works with its partner organizations, LWR and LWF in responding to disasters here at home and abroad. When a disaster occurs, the primary objective is to save lives, alleviate suffering and provide food, medicine, shelter and clothing as well as provide protection in war-like emergency situations. After the media is gone, the ELCA and our partner organizations continue to accompany the people to bring about recovery and healing.
