The Advent season has arrived and a new church year has begun. This season gives us time to prepare the way for the coming of Christ, both in the past, the present, and in the future. Advent used to be somber like Lent, but these days it is a joyful time in the church to reflect on Christ’s coming into the world and what it means to us as Christians.
The word, advent, literally means arrival, beginning, coming. It can also mean the first coming of Christ in his birth or the expected second coming of Christ on the last day.
When we speak of Advent, we are not only talking about God incarnate, come in the manger as the Christ child. We are also talking about Christ crucified, risen and ascended, the judge in his second coming in glory. We are living in the waiting time between the two advents of Christ. And while we wait, we are to look for his presence among us now. We use an Advent wreath to celebrate the gifts of hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brings among us and to remember the light he shines into the world.
Where do you see the Christ child, the Word of God, present among us now? How do you shine his light and make his presence known?
He is with us,
Pastor Andrea
