"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it". John 1:5
Fall is upon us and the darkness creeps in earlier in the day. The other evening while making supper, I opened the front door for to allow some crisp, fall air into the house. Before I knew it, this little bird was flying around in my kitchen. This is a screenshot of a website description of this sweet bird unknown to me, a Lucy’s Warbler. Now this was somewhat unusual since it was dark outside. This little warbler should have been safe in its nest. But it was lost in my kitchen! All the lights were on in the kitchen, but the bird seemed to be in the dark. Couldn’t find its way. Kept bumping into the ceiling trying to get out. Flapping those little wings so hard while trying to find a place to land. Poor little bird finally perched on top of a picture frame hanging in the kitchen and held on for dear life.
How to help this little bird? Well, lead it to the light by turning off the lights! We turned off all the lights in the house so the bird was in the dark. Then we turned on all the outside lights. The bird flew straight to the light in the darkness outside and was safe. Whew! Feather clean up ensued along with a few smatterings of bird doo, but I didn’t mind. I was just happy the little warbler was safe and had flown to the light.
It's like that for us. John tells us that the light of Christ shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. Sometimes it really does feel like we are in the dark. Sometimes we need the darkness to see the light. But the light of Jesus is always shining. Go to the light. Cling to the light. This is the light of life that keeps us safe in our nests even when the darkness surrounds us. Not only that, but we can also be the light for others when they struggle. Keep looking for the light of Christ that shines in the darkness.
Light of life, Pastor Andrea
